The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing completed more than 200,000 linear meters of stormwater drainage networks in a number of cities and regions across the Kingdom during the first half of 2026. These works aim to enhance cities’ readiness to deal with rainfall events, reduce water accumulation, support public safety and smooth traffic flow, protect assets and facilities, and strengthen the continuity of municipal services.

The total length of stormwater drainage networks completed during the period reached approximately 200.3 thousand linear meters, including more than 115,000 meters of main networks and around 85,000 meters of secondary networks, with an average exceeding one kilometer per day during the first half of the year. This reflects the expanding scope of field works and the continued development of infrastructure in cities according to their needs and priorities.

These works contribute to increasing cities’ capacity to drain rainwater and respond to rainfall events more efficiently. This, in turn, supports residents’ quality of life by enhancing road safety and traffic routes, reducing the impacts associated with water accumulation, protecting public facilities and municipal assets, and strengthening the ability of neighborhoods and facilities to continue their activities and services during rainy conditions.

The completed works included various components of the stormwater drainage and flood-risk mitigation system. More than 10,200 meters of box culverts and approximately 4,900 meters of stormwater and flood drainage channels were completed, in addition to the construction of 24 retaining walls. These projects support the integration of the system’s components and enhance its efficiency in managing rainwater and floods while protecting the areas and facilities within their scope.

The projects also involved the use of more than 87,500 cubic meters of reinforced concrete in the construction of box culverts, channels, and retaining walls, as part of the structural works required to develop the drainage system and strengthen its capacity to protect cities, residents, and facilities.

The Ministry, in coordination with municipalities and regional municipal authorities, is working to direct infrastructure projects based on the characteristics and urban and rainfall-related needs of each city. This approach ensures that resources are allocated to priority locations, existing assets are made more efficient, and drainage networks and their components are developed in line with urban growth and expansion.

These works form part of an integrated approach to developing municipal infrastructure that goes beyond constructing networks and facilities. The approach aims to build cities that are better prepared and more capable of responding to rainfall conditions, while supporting service continuity, protecting facilities and assets, improving the urban environment, and directly enhancing residents’ quality of life and experience in their cities.

The Ministry continues to implement and develop stormwater drainage and flood-risk mitigation projects across various regions of the Kingdom, strengthening urban resilience and preparedness while supporting a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable urban environment for residents.
