The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, as part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s delegation participating in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development ( HLPF ), held at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, participated in a session entitled “Sustainable Cities and Communities,” during which it reviewed the Kingdom’s efforts in promoting sustainable urban development, and its achievements in quality of life, homeownership, and the development of public spaces, reflecting the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 towards building more inclusive, sustainable and resilient cities.
During his participation in the session, Engineer Anmar bin Abdulrahman Shabaneh, Director of the Urban Economy and Resilience Department at the Urban Planning and Land Agency, reviewed the integrated urban approach adopted by the Kingdom, which is based on enhancing integration between the housing, municipal services, transportation and environment sectors, in a way that contributes to achieving the goals of sustainable development and enhances the quality of life in Saudi cities.
He explained that the Kingdom has achieved qualitative accomplishments in this field, most notably the increase in the rate of homeownership to 66.24% by the end of 2025, approaching the Saudi Vision 2030 target of 70%, in addition to about 75% of the population enjoying access to public spaces, supported by a number of national initiatives, most notably the Bahja project, which contributed to adding more than 12 million square meters of developed community spaces.
He pointed out that the Kingdom continues to develop and update regional and local city plans, in order to support the achievement of sustainable development goals, raise the efficiency of urban development, and keep pace with national development objectives.
He stressed that achieving sustainable cities and communities is a fundamental pillar for achieving many of the Sustainable Development Goals, through improving quality of life, promoting economic growth, protecting the environment, and supporting social inclusion, emphasizing the importance of strengthening international cooperation, exchanging experiences, and building partnerships based on knowledge and innovation to address common urban challenges.
It is worth noting that the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development ( HLPF ) is the United Nations’ main platform for monitoring and reviewing progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. It is held annually with the participation of Member States, international organizations and various stakeholders, with the aim of promoting the exchange of experiences and reviewing best practices, and supporting international efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
