The Ministry of Municipality and Housing removed more than 120 million cubic meters of construction and demolition waste during the past year.

During the past year, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing, represented by the secretariats and municipalities, was able to remove (120,871,162) m3 of construction and demolition waste and excavation debris from vacant lands, as part of its ongoing efforts to implement the initiative to "address visual pollution," which includes removing illegal advertising signs, graffiti and posters that distort the public appearance, addressing the situation of street vendors, and removing canopies and parking sheds located on vacant lands within neighborhoods. It also worked on a plan to address 85 qualified roads, according to the annual report issued by the Ministry on the achievements of the year 2021.

The ministry improved and developed a package of procedures, foremost among them the removal of damaged cars in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, where (116,638) cars were removed during the past year, and the situation of (2,188,530) cleanliness containers inside neighborhoods in various regions of the Kingdom was addressed.

Continuing its ongoing efforts to address visual pollution and improve the urban landscape, the Ministry removed (1,066,463) illegal advertising signs, as well as writings that distorted the public appearance in an area of (2,836,447) m2, and dealt with the situation of (58,061) illegal mobile shops, in addition to pruning, coordinating and planting (14,528,405) trees in the main and secondary streets, and removing (20,621) sites of rest areas, livestock pens, huts and camps scattered randomly in various regions of the Kingdom.

Repairs and maintenance were carried out on children’s playgrounds in parks and public places with an area of (3,393,359) m2, and (78,728) canopies, hangars and illegal parking spaces were removed within neighborhoods, and public street potholes were repaired with an area of (15,946,864) m2, and dilapidated sidewalks were repaired with a length of (4,011,238) linear meters, and (876,018) lighting poles were repaired, in addition to fencing vacant lands located on the main axes of cities with a length of (278,606) linear meters, and (148,334) building numbering and street name signs were repaired.

In its efforts, the Ministry was keen to involve civil society in developing proposals and solutions. It conducted a survey of the urban landscape in cities to monitor the shortcomings in addressing visual pollution in Saudi cities, with the participation of more than 142,000 people, in addition to developing urban mechanisms and policies to develop informal settlements.

The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing called on citizens and residents to cooperate with it to achieve the goals of the initiative by reporting violators and those responsible for visual distortions, through the municipalities’ special applications or through the unified reporting number 940.
