The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, in cooperation with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, has launched the updated Table of Food Law Violations with the aim of enhancing food safety and raising regulatory compliance levels among food establishments, as part of integrated efforts to protect public health and advance the food control system.

The updated classification of violations focuses on standards that consider the size of the establishment and the type of economic activity, contributing to fair application of penalties and encouraging small and medium enterprises to comply without discrimination.

The updated system introduces a phased approach to enforcement; a warning is issued for non-severe violations with a grace period for rectification, while penalties are applied immediately for severe violations that compromise consumer safety and public health.

The violations now include new elements across the food supply chain, such as delivery representatives, food traceability, handling food poisoning cases, maintaining food records, and ensuring documentation and transparency to protect both the consumer and the establishment.

As part of strengthening consumer awareness, strict requirements have been imposed on menu labeling regarding salt content, caffeine, and physical activity guidance, supporting healthy lifestyles and enabling individuals to make informed food choices.

The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing and SFDA stressed that the updated classification of violations represents an integrated control framework designed to establish a “prevention before penalty” approach. They affirmed that food safety is a non-negotiable commitment, and penalties serve as a regulatory mechanism to protect society from negligence in public health violations. They emphasized the need for all food establishments to comply with food safety standards to enhance adherence to approved safety regulations and legislation.

The updated Table of Food Law Violations can be accessed through the Ministry’s website at: https://momah.gov.sa/ar/node/15198.
