Minister of Municipal, Rural Affairs and Housing Majed Al-Hogail headed today the Saudi delegation to the 21st meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ministerial Committee for Housing Affairs, held as part of the 'Urban October – The First Gulf Housing Week' conference, which is taking place in Muscat, Oman, from October 29 to 31.

The ministers discussed several important aspects in the housing sector, including the memorandum of the Secretariat General regarding the joint Gulf housing action plan. This plan included several significant decisions related to the housing sector, such as approving the sustainability guide for houses in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and the guide for modern construction techniques. They also approved the joint Gulf housing action plan for the years 2024 to 2030. Additionally, the meeting discussed the memorandum of the Secretariat General regarding housing information databases.

The meeting announced the winning projects of the 2023 GCC Award for Housing Work, in its fifth edition. The Sustainable City Yiti project by Omran Company in Oman won first place and a prize of SAR50,000; the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure project for designing economic and sustainable housing units won second place, and a prize of SAR30,000; Al Jaar housing project in Yanbu Industrial City, of the Royal Commission for Jubail, won third place and a prize of SAR20,000.

The meeting also reviewed the updates on 2023 GCC Award for Housing Work for the new edition. They discussed the document outlining the unified general regulations for property owners and the specialized conferences and workshops in the field of housing that will be held in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The meeting also included discussions on the memorandum of the Secretariat General regarding the Second Gulf Housing Week conference, which is scheduled to be held in 2025.

The ministers stressed the importance of continuing to participate in regional and international meetings related to housing to highlight the Gulf work in the field and develop a mechanism to exchange housing experts and specialists between GCC Countries. The General Secretariat’s proposal regarding signing agreements with specialized organizations that serve the housing sector was also discussed.

The 'Urban October – The First Gulf Housing Week' conference, which began the day before yesterday, was held under the theme "The Resilience of the Urban Economy." The conferences brought together over 2,000 experts and specialists in the housing sector, along with 35 universities. The aim of this conference was to showcase the latest and contemporary research and studies in urban sectors, focusing on four key sectors: housing, urban planning, future school buildings and city resilience.
