The Ministry of Municipality and Housing completed more than 6,000 kilometers of road projects last year.

The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing, represented by the secretariats and municipalities in various regions of the Kingdom, continued its diligent efforts to develop urban road networks and their services according to the best practices and technologies used in various locations, as part of its active contribution to the objectives of the Quality of Life Program – one of the programs of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. The total length of paved roads completed in 2021 reached (6072) linear kilometers, a growth rate of 3.3% compared to 2020. The length of paved, landscaped, and illuminated roads completed reached (1535) linear kilometers, and paved roads only reached (4537) linear kilometers. The total number of lighting poles of all types completed reached 124,900 lighting poles, a growth of 5.2% during the same period, including (32,417) halogen lighting poles, (89,828) LED poles, and (2664) solar-powered poles, according to what was stated in the Ministry’s report on the achievements of 2021.

The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing was keen to preserve municipal assets through their maintenance, as the area of streets that were maintained during the past year amounted to (29,400,297) m2. The area of sidewalks that were maintained reached (2,102,509) m2, in addition to the maintenance of more than 935,000 lighting poles, while the number of poles whose lighting was replaced with LED technology reached (477,683) poles, which contributed to raising the efficiency of tunnels and saving electrical energy. In addition, the Ministry, represented by the Secretariats and sub-municipalities, re-engineered (10,626) vehicle parking spaces on existing roads. During the past year, the Secretariats and sub-municipalities completed (18) bridges, bringing the total number of bridges in the Kingdom to (488) bridges and (25) pedestrian bridges, bringing the total number of pedestrian bridges to (296). They also completed the implementation of two tunnels to facilitate the flow of traffic, bringing the total number of completed tunnels to (152) tunnels.

The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing implemented a system of rainwater drainage and flood control networks, with the total length of rainwater drainage and flood control networks reaching more than 7,200 linear kilometers by the end of 2021. The total length of rainwater drainage and flood control networks, both main and secondary, reached approximately 592 linear kilometers across the Kingdom's municipalities, representing a 3.8% increase over 2020. The total number of retaining walls during the same period reached 5,888, while (575) retaining walls were completed this year to mitigate flood risks, representing a 67.1% increase over the previous year.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing witnessed significant activity during the past year 2021 to develop the municipal services and infrastructure sector and its service programs, as the Ministry launched a program to develop the infrastructure of cities that includes 26 initiatives that address the challenges of the municipal services and infrastructure sector in order to contribute effectively to achieving the objectives of the Quality of Life Program.
